If you take a consolidation loan, you will be able to pay off all your outstanding bills and replace them with a new loan, at a lower interest rate.

Types of consolidation loans

You can replace all your multiple debts with a new debt consolidation loan, with a lower monthly payment. There are 2 main kinds of consolidation loans. These are:

· Secured loans: A secured loan is that type of loan that requires collateral. Generally it is taken to pay off mortgage. Usually to reduce mortgage costs, the homeowners take home equity loans or refinance their existing mortgage, with a new one, at a lower interest rate. If you take a refinance loan that is larger than your existing loan, you can pay off your current mortgage and also use the extra cash to pay off your other bills. If you can’t repay the loan, your property may be taken away by the lender.

· Unsecured loans: The unsecured loans are the personal loans. The interest rate on personal loan is higher than that of the secured loans. But, most people prefer to take this loan, as there is no risk of losing your property, in case you fail to make repayments.

Advantages of consolidation loan

The benefits of taking a consolidation loan are:

1. Single payment: Instead of making payments to multiple creditors you have to make a single monthly payment, so, it will help you to save more money. If you can add some extra cash in addition to your minimum payment, you can pay off your new debt faster.

2. Lower interest rate: Generally, in most cases, the consolidated loan is a secured loan or a home equity loan. So, the interest rate is much lower and it will enable you to save more on your repayment.

3. Single creditor: Instead of having multiple creditors, with the consolidated loan you have to deal with a single creditor, so, in case any dispute arises, you need to communicate with a single creditor only.

4. Lower monthly payment: As the new consolidated loan has a lower interest rate, your monthly payment amount also reduces, thus, you can save more.

5. Tax benefit: You will get tax deduction for the interest you are paying towards your mortgage, with the new consolidated home equity loan.

You need to remember that, when you take a debt consolidation loan, you do not become debt-free, rather you have taken a new loan. So, unless you repay that loan completely, you should resist incurring more debts by purchasing things on credit.
***********************************************************************************
About Jason Holmes :
He is a regular writer with Debt Consolidation Care and is also a contributory writer with other financial sites. It sounds simple, but for me its huge. While, I used to post frequently to my blogs, over the last few years i have simply been distracted by other more trivial things in my life. Many thanks to my new team Member Sara James for taking a chance on a blog that has been void of life for far too long. Read her article here on The Emerging Debt Free Generation. However, the ability to learn from your own mistakes does not come naturally. Even more amazing is when someone has the ability, courage, and dedication to take this process a step further. This process involves owning up to your mistakes and then using them to teach and guide others. The results can be amazing.
It is inevitable that you will hear someone say something along these lines, "you can't understand what I'm going through." Sure I may not know exactly what you are going though or I may not understand what you are feeling or are going through. However, if I admit my own mistakes, then maybe you and I can share similar experiences.
It is one thing to learn from the mistakes of others, but is a whole other ball game to actually learn from your own mistakes. To do that, you actually have to admit your faults and commit to learn and grow from them.
One fellow blogger is commited to helping others learn from his own mistakes. You can check out his blog HERE
Here are some other pages that deal with the topic of learning from one's mistakes
1) "Learning from retirees' mistakes"
2) "3 things I wish I'd done"
3) " How to learn from your mistakes "
4)"Learn from your mistakes -- without going broke"
5) "I'm a loser"

No more “I will do it tomorrow’s”

Nearly four months have passed since my last post to the Emerging Debt Free Generation. I told myself at least a dozen times during those four months of procrastination aided writer’s block that tomorrow would be the perfect day to write. But to no avail, the perfect tomorrow would never surface. Each day that had been premeditated to be the perfect tomorrow never failed to come and go without the plan being forgotten.

Why is it that today never seems to be a good day to get anything done? Today tends to be the day that we accomplish all of yesterday’s plans. The rent was due yesterday, but yesterday we said to ourselves that “it will only be a day late if we pay it tomorrow. I will put that extra five dollars in the bank tomorrow since I really don’t need to spend it. Oops, tomorrow is Sunday and the bank is already closed for the weekend.

Saying “tomorrow” to health insurance for one’s children could affect your ability to access adequate care for them. Saying “tomorrow” to car insurance runs you the risk of serious penalties in many, if not all of the 50 states. Saying “tomorrow” to investing today could mean missing out on the “opportunity of a lifetime.”

Procrastination is not limited to decisions that involve financial and well-being concerns. Perhaps you haven’t visited or at least called a close friend in years. You kept putting off making contact. You procrastinated so long that you were never aware that your friend was sick and was afraid to tell you for whatever reason. Now your friend has past away and you have only his grave site to talk to. Yes this analogy is dark and disheartening, but to think that “It could never happen to me, so I will just talk to them tomorrow” is just plain silly.Volumes have been written on the subject of procrastination, and TOMORROW much more will be written. Everything will always be tomorrow until we find the will to do it today!

So what do you do? You just make the decision to do it today! See yourself accomplishing today what you otherwise would have done tomorrow. Pay that late bill, spend time with that long forgotten friend, and invest every second of every day WISELY. Take that idea that comes to you in the shower and run with it, preferably after you’ve dressed, please.

I once read something from a well-known writer who said the key to defeating procrastination is to “WRITE IT DOWN.” What do writing it down do?" It ensures that we won’t forget that great plan or that one idea that could hold the key to your financial freedom.

In our quest to be the “Debt Free Generation, let us also be the generation that no longer lives by the motto “I will do it tomorrow” but chooses to adopt and live by the words “ I am doing it today.”

"Carnival of Debt Reduction"

Carnival of Debt Reduction #1 Go ahead click on the ad, if you dare.

You, Feeling adventerous and in need of a new tv, click on the add thinking"wow could this be true"? Can I just answer a FEW survey questions and get a new TV?

Well, technically yes you can. But the catch is that you have to usually sign up for at least two programs from the TV giving company's beloved sponsors. When you do this, you run into some serious risk.

You get suckered into the deal thinking "its only a few commitments, what harm can be done? The risk I refer to here is the contracts that you AGREE to when you sign up for these partnerships. By signing up for "free computer learning" or the special "introductory trial" you are actually giving these companies LEGAL PERMISSION TO AUTOMATICALLY DEBIT YOUR ACCOUNT SOME PREDETERMINED AMOUNT OF MONEY AFTER YOUR INTRODUCTORY PERIOD RUNS OUT!! Sometimes this can be as high as $60 dollars a month.

Think that it won't happen to you? Think again. How are you going to know when you have not checked your checking account in three months!!! This is not to suggest that we are blind fools who never monitor where our money is going. It is just the simple fact that many people likely have two or more checking accounts, some of which they don't check on a regular basis. This can be a person more likely to miss that ever-outrageous automatic debit from their account which may be impossible to ever get back.

This warning pertains to "Free Stuff" offers, but in actuality it encompasses a host of contracts, agreements, and programs, that we all sign our signature to, whether it is our John Hancock or a simple e-signature,
the results are the same:LEGALLY BINDING!!!

READ THE FINE PRINT!!! His name is Speed. He was named after the movie with the same name and because he was so speedy when he was a puppy.

Anyways, he was yelping loudly and I felt awful! I cradled him in my arms for about 5 minutes, while massaging his belly until he was his usual hyper self again.

This incident reminded me of how one of my credit card companies slammed the sliding glass door on my credit card payment.

I paid the credit card payment on time or so I thought. Yet the company held the payment until Monday because the due date "just happened to fall" on a SATURDAY. This unfortunate circumstance meant my payment was late.

Since my payment was late, I was forced to pay a $35 dollar "late fee". To make matters worse, that "little" $35 dollar fee caused my account to overdraft, resulting in, you guessed it, another $35 fee.

May my little story serve as a friendly reminder to "Beware of the sliding glass door" !!!

never fear, Collection Man is here

I am the voice of life's chaos. My sense of timing is nerve-racking. I will call you just when it seems as though things couldn't get any worse.
Just when you have managed to not think about your financial mess for one minute, I will be there to remind you. I will make sure that you remember all of the bills that you cannot or will not pay. Heck, I will even call you just for fun and ride your case about some bill that you have already paid!! Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
Am I getting paid to do my job, you ask? Oh, don't worry about me, I make plenty of money calling people just like you. I even call the same person everyday at the same time sometimes for weeks at a time. Rest assured, I will get what is due. You will pay your bill. HA HA HA!!! I don't care about your situation. I don't care that someone in your family just died or that you are on welfare because you were just "downsized"! I JUST WANT YOUR MONEY.
I would not call what I do harassment, I call it friendly reminding. So what if I call you at 8 in the morning on a Saturday! So what if I interrupt your dinner. So what If you are sleeping or tending to the baby. The Arch card is what they call it. I recently received an Arch Card as a birthday present. I was somewhat excited to get it, I suppose if for no other reason but the novelty of it, and have used it on many occasions. Its quicker than cash and it eliminates the need to sign a charge slip.
I was happy with it until the Mcdonalds that I went to told me that I could not make a partial payment with cash. I had a few bucks and I didn't want to spend my Arch card funds too soon... you get the point. Maybe this is only specific to certain McDonalds. Or maybe they just haven't acquired the necessary technology to facilitate my pressing need to pay a dollar first then hand them my Arch Card.
Surely I am not the only one who has come across this situation.

What does it take to get serious?

What does it take to get you serious about combating your personal debt?
Do you need to be inspired, motivated, and encouraged? Hopefully not!

I believe that hidden within each of us lies a stroke of genius. Maybe it is that idea that pops in your head like a light switch. Whenever, your stroke of genius makes its guest appearance and infiltrates your thoughts,
ACT ON IT!

Write down that idea, however trivial it may seem. The quick answer would definitely be "zero". However, many people just might disagree.

So, what about one credit card? Can we keep up with our payments, avoid late fees and otherwise maintain a respectable credit rating? Uh, credit rating? What's that? Hmm..another day, another topic, I suppose.

Maybe, two is the ideal amount. Yet, can we avoid the apparent balance transfer trap?
There are probably many people who have benefited from credit card balance transfers. But I am not one of those people.

What about those people who have three or more credit cards? There are two scenarios that come to mind. They are either buried in credit card debt or they pay off their balances EACH MONTH on a regular basis.

As we seek to determine the IDEAL amount of credit cards that one should have, two questions come to mind. First, what are the negative aspects or drawbacks to having one, two, three, or more credit cards. Secondly, what are some of the benefits as well as the disadvantages of having zero credit cards?

Check out a few other ideas regarding the ideal amount of credit cards. Eileen Alt Powell, AP Business Writer, reported some time ago that "under pressure from federal regulators, credit card issuers are raising the minimum payments consumers must make on their monthly bills.
If the claim holds to be true, many consumers will definitely be paying off their credit cards faster.
It is increasingly important to verify the validity of information found from internet sources as information tends to be tested and found to be inaccurate. Take for example a survey IndexCreditCards.com which finds that "contrary to reports in many media outlets, an IndexCreditCards.com survey of the seven largest credit card issuers found that none is doubling credit card minimum payments

Okay so maybe you won't be opening your mail anytime soon and find your credit card minimum have gone up. Should you take the initiative and increase your minimums on you own?
Here are a few people that suggest that you should:

Ronaleen Roha --"Avoid the Minimum Payment Trap"

Annelena Lobb, CNN/Money Staff Writer
"Credit Cards: 8 Dirty Secrets"

http://www.newhorizon.org -- "Stop Paying the Minimum"

Alan Barnes-- "Debt: Don't Pay Your Minimum Balance"

To close or not to close, that is the question.

What was your experience like the last time you went through the process of closing a credit card account? Each passing day of this new year will either be another day closer to debt freedom or yet another day further away from it. Which direction will you take?

One technique that has helped many people is the ideas of goal setting. The one thing that is common among successful goal setters and goal reachers seems to be that they write things down.

Some people write diaries or journals. Others use sticky notes or notecards. Each of these are useful and beneficial in their own ways, but each can be lost within the confines of a messy office, bedroom, or car. So what else is there?

Creating and posting to a blog may now be one of the most efficient and effective ways to keep track of goals. Not only are your goal notes now readily accessible, but they are viewable to other people who see your blog. By allowing people to post to your blog, you may find that there are many people who have been successful in achieving the same goals that you have just set.
Sites such as Blogger allow you the option of screening all posts. This way you can only allow posts that stay on topic or are otherwise encouraging.

One of our fellow bloggers has made good use of her blog with respect to her own goals. Check out her Jan 2, 2006 post HERE for more details.

Finally, feel free to post your comments about you or someone you know making goals for the new year!

Happy New year 2006 !

Happy New Year! As you welcome in 2006 and say so long to 2005,what goals do you have for the new year? Chances are that some of your primary goals include some of the following:
1) pay off credit cards
2) take care of all collections actions pending
3) pay late bills
4) get the power turned back on (okay that's an immmediate goal)
5)pay off student loans
6)pay off the mortage (finally !!!)
7)own your car free and clear

Which of these pertain to your situation? Can you imagine what it will feel like to be debt free? It can happen, you can do it!!
Let's all make this year a year of overcoming our financial burdens. You know how it goes. Lose weight, gain weight. Eat less, Eat more. Sleep more, sleep less. Spend more, spend less.
Of all the resolutions that will be made, it is inevitable that many of them will be broken within the first week of the new year. How do we go about making New Year's resolutions that are actually achieved? Hmm. Well that maybe a question better left unanswered.
Perhaps, we'd be better suited to simply make one resolution and commit to make it a personal mission or goal to achieve.
May 2006 be the best year of your life. The writers of The Emerging Debt Free Generation wish you well in your journey to DEBT FREEDOM!!!! Also, as the year progresses, be sure to post your comments to let us know how the journey is going.
Let's make 2006 a year where we learn from each other to shed off unwanted debt and improve our finances. As we do so, we can rest assure that our lives will be better as a result.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

A fellow blogger needs advice....

Recently, I spent about an hour examining the various financial blogs. As I have contemplated direction for the Emerging Debt Free Generation, I settled upon one in particular. So here goes. In addition to striving for the goals set forth in the first two Debt Free Gen. posts, much emphasis will be placed on generating an internet-wide team effort among bloggers that are serious about improving their financial situations.
The methods in which this will all take place remains in development stage...It will be up to each and every blogger that comes across
One idea that exists is to simply list the urls of fellow bloggers in need.
Take for example the following example at

http://dollarz.blogspot.com/2005/12/timing-dilemma.html
The author of this particular blog looks like he could use some advice. He lists his email at the site. His primary concern is balancing his paying of his student loans with his mortage and his growing family. Perhaps someone out there will see this post and offer to extend some guidance his way.

Why commit to a cause?

Yr. #1 Art. #3

What is one of the best Christmas presents you could ever give to yourself? One definite answer to this question is to commit to change your life. We are talking about stepping up to the plate and taking action. Doing this requires initiative, courage, and perseverance. In the end, you will have the wonderful satisfaction of knowing that you set on a course to change your life for the better. You were the catalyst that ignited a personal revolution. Sure, many will have helped you along the way. But no one can do ANYTHING without some help. You and you alone took the first step towards your goal. That first step originated inside your head as a thought or a dream.
What are talking about? We are talking about the moment that you decide that
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
You will no longer be a slave to your debt. You refuse to spend your life fearing that the telephone ringing means yet another bill collector is calling. Bank fees can not exist in your life.
DEBT MUST GO!
So this is where you click your mouse and jump to some magical website that will solve all your financial worries, right? That's not happening today. Sorry. But what is hopefully happening today is that you are deciding that today is the day that you decided to educate yourself. You can read every financial success book ever written. That would make you very intelligent about a few of life's questions. But you won't be finished for about 50 years.
The only logical point of action is to make a commitment to yourself and set some goals. Okay, back to this decision to educate yourself. For starters, ask some friends or colleagues what books they have read lately concerning the financial world. Their answers may surprise you. Finally before you decide to read something, check what others have said about it. At least you will have more than one opioion to rely on.
If you are reading this post, COMMENT! Next start a discussion line and finally, become a part of the Emerging Debt Freedom Generation team!!!

Who is a part of this generation?

Day 4 Transmission #2
As we embark on our journey, we are bound to face many setbacks. But take heart, for we can and will succeed. We must refuse to give up and we must join together against the economic evils within our society. Our generation does not consist of radical revolutionists, but rather a collaboration of scores of REGULAR people who have it within themselves to achieve great things.
There exists only one requirement to be considered a member of the emerging debt free generation. It is a requirement that has taken its place out of necessity. The requirement is simple. A person must possess a desire to be FREE from the economic bondage of debt. This word "bondage" is used in this instance because a person typically becomes more and more controlled by their debt as it increases, making it seem impossible to get out of debt.
If it is true that "knowledge is power"than it would seem as very important that we get the facts about consumer debt, including credit cards, banks, and loans. Along the way, our knowledge will surely grow in the areas of investing and financial terminology.
It is our ultimate goal that not only will we FREE ourselves from Debt's stronghold, but we will have learned to spend our money productively and wisely.

The Birth of a new Generation....

Day One, Transmission #1
I hereby designate today, Wednesday December 21st, 2005 as the dawning of a new generation. It is a generation that is taking a stand. It is a stand against the forces that threaten to cripple the American Economy.
It is a generation that has come to the conclusion that certain banks, credit card companies, and other financial institutions must release their chokehold on our finances. If our goal of dethroning the powers that be cannot realistically be achieved, than it is ultimately ourselvelves that must change.
We must change our spending habits, relinquish our dependence on credit cards, and PURSUE A LIFE THAT IS WITHOUT DEBT.
Today signals the emergence of......
THE DEBT FREE GENERATION
