No more “I will do it tomorrow’s”

Nearly four months have passed since my last post to the Emerging Debt Free Generation. I told myself at least a dozen times during those four months of procrastination aided writer’s block that tomorrow would be the perfect day to write. But to no avail, the perfect tomorrow would never surface. Each day that had been premeditated to be the perfect tomorrow never failed to come and go without the plan being forgotten.

Why is it that today never seems to be a good day to get anything done? Today tends to be the day that we accomplish all of yesterday’s plans. The rent was due yesterday, but yesterday we said to ourselves that “it will only be a day late if we pay it tomorrow. I will put that extra five dollars in the bank tomorrow since I really don’t need to spend it. Oops, tomorrow is Sunday and the bank is already closed for the weekend.

Saying “tomorrow” to health insurance for one’s children could affect your ability to access adequate care for them. Saying “tomorrow” to car insurance runs you the risk of serious penalties in many, if not all of the 50 states. Saying “tomorrow” to investing today could mean missing out on the “opportunity of a lifetime.”

Procrastination is not limited to decisions that involve financial and well-being concerns. Perhaps you haven’t visited or at least called a close friend in years. You kept putting off making contact. You procrastinated so long that you were never aware that your friend was sick and was afraid to tell you for whatever reason. Now your friend has past away and you have only his grave site to talk to. Yes this analogy is dark and disheartening, but to think that “It could never happen to me, so I will just talk to them tomorrow” is just plain silly.Volumes have been written on the subject of procrastination, and TOMORROW much more will be written. Everything will always be tomorrow until we find the will to do it today!

So what do you do? You just make the decision to do it today! See yourself accomplishing today what you otherwise would have done tomorrow. Pay that late bill, spend time with that long forgotten friend, and invest every second of every day WISELY. Take that idea that comes to you in the shower and run with it, preferably after you’ve dressed, please.

I once read something from a well-known writer who said the key to defeating procrastination is to “WRITE IT DOWN.” What do writing it down do?" It ensures that we won’t forget that great plan or that one idea that could hold the key to your financial freedom.

In our quest to be the “Debt Free Generation, let us also be the generation that no longer lives by the motto “I will do it tomorrow” but chooses to adopt and live by the words “ I am doing it today.”
